Artists and filmmakers: Jacky Connolly, Adrian Jonas Haim, Michael Stumpf, Robin Klengel (Total Refusal), Lawrence Lek.

The concept of auteur theory, originally developed within the context of film studies, posits that a film reflects the creative vision and personal style of its director, who is considered the primary “author” of the work. As machinima continues to evolve as an art form, this program explores how the elusive concept of authorship can be applied to works created within game engines, where the boundaries between gameplay, filmmaking, and digital art become increasingly blurred.

The three works featured in the Auteur Theory program exemplify the unique ways in which machinima artists and filmmakers assert their creative vision and personal style within the constraints of existing video game environments and game design tools. By repurposing game visuals, mechanics, and narratives, these artists create deeply personal works that challenge our understanding of authorship, creativity, and the nature of video games as a medium for artistic expression.

Kinderfilm, the latest creation by the Austrian collective Total Refusal (represented by Adrian Jonas Haim, Michael Stumpf, and Robin Klengel), unfolds within the digital spaces of Grand Theft Auto V’s San Andreas. The story follows a middle-aged man named Edgar, who drifts aimlessly through Los Santos, confined to his car. Total Refusal uses this familiar setting to explore themes of societal critique and hope, echoing the aesthetics and concerns of unclassifiable filmmakers like Charlie Kaufman and Kristoffer Borgli.

Lawrence Lek’s Theta immerses viewers in the journey of a self-driving police car grappling with an existential crisis within the desolate streets of SimBeijing, an abandoned smart city. As Theta confides in its integrated therapist, a self-help AI named Guanyin, the narrative unveils the grim realities that led to the city's abandonment. This stunning work is a continuation of Lek's Sinofuturist universe, delving into themes of identity, surveillance, and empathy within the technological age.

Jacky Connolly’s Descent into Hell transports viewers into a post-capitalist, dystopian vision of the United States. Crafted through an innovative amalgamation of scenes from Grand Theft Auto V and Connolly’s original animations, the piece diverges from the game’s central narrative to delve into the stark realities of everyday life for its characters. Connolly's work reflects her foray into the digital expanse of GTA V during the 2020 lockdown, prompting reflection on the stark realities of our age of collapse.

In the unique auditorium setting of the Milan Machinima Festival’s Sala dei 146, the Auteur Theory program transcends traditional cinematic experiences, redefining the essence of auteur theory in the age of art after video games. As viewers gather in this communal space, they are not merely spectators but participants in an immersive journey through video game landscapes transformed by the artists’s vision. This collective viewing experience amplifies the impact of each work, where the manipulation of game engines becomes a conduit for exploring the nuanced interactions between technology, society, and individuality.

The featured works delve into critical themes, examining the erosion of human connections, the pervasive influence of technology, and the stark realities shaped by late capitalism, while leveraging the familiar terrains of digital games to craft narratives that challenge and redefine societal norms. The characters within these narratives, marked by isolation and alienation, serve as mirrors reflecting the viewer’s own experiences in the contemporary world. Through a masterful blend of game aesthetics, original animations, and evocative sound design, these works construct immersive environments that invite introspection on the current state of society, the impact of technology on our lives, and the undiminished importance of genuine human connections.

By curating these three distinct and unique works under the umbrella of the Auteur Theory program, the Milan Machinima Festival underscores machinima’s capacity to serve as a powerful medium for creative storytelling, social critique, and the exploration of complex ideas. This program not only showcases the ability of artists to infuse their unique visions and styles into the constraints of commercial game worlds but also celebrates machinima’s evolution as an art form. It highlights the medium’s capability to foster a deeper understanding of the world around us, encouraging viewers to contemplate the intricate dance between reality and digital (re)creation, and pushing the boundaries of what machinima can achieve in conveying socially relevant concerns.

EVENT: FROM EXPANDED CINEMA TO MACHINIMA (FEBRUARY 3 2024, MILAN)

MEMORIES OF THE SCREEN #3

FROM EXPANDED CINEMA TO MACHINIMA

Saturday February 3 2024, 09:30 - 13:30 FREE ENTRY

Accademia di Belle Arti, Brera

Sede di San Carpoforo, Via Formentini 12, Milan, Italy

Curated by Simonetta Fadda e Matteo Bittanti

Special Guest: GianFilippo Pedote: Artavazd Pelešjan and Godfrey Reggio’s special affinities

In the latest acclaimed lecture series organized by artist Dimitri Kozaris, Simonetta Fadda and Matteo Bittanti unravel the interwoven lineages from analog video art provocateurs to today’s game-based machinima practitioners. As digital media intensify our reliance on simulated realities, artists like the late Phil Solomon and Harun Farocki strategically repurposed gaming assets to unveil the affective and ideological functions of these persuasive worlds. Contemporary figures like Dutch filmmaker Bram Ruiter advance this tradition of appropriation-as-critique, harnessing the medium’s own tools to reveal otherwise hidden currents of awe and unease within emergent virtual topographies.

Yet as Bittanti’s historical contextualization underscores, contemporary artists build directly upon tactics predating the digital revolution — from the Situationists’ mischievous image hijacking to Peggy Ahwesh’s decontextualization of gaming imagery. While machinima constitutes a 21st century iteration, the deeper creative impulse persists: to remake perception by tearing open and radically recombining the fabric of the present.

This drive resonates with earlier aspirations like Gene Youngblood’s influential Expanded Cinema concept in the radical 1970s, which called for imploding and transcending the standard frame itself. From celluloid and analog signals to CGI, the desire endures to expose and transform the unseen dimensions, glitches, and bugs lurking within everyday media architectures. By spotlighting today’s vanguard remixers through their seminal precursors across eras, Fadda and Bittanti’s shared inquiry reveals the drive of the avant-garde tradition pulsating within creative digital disruptions past, present and future.

The politics of gaming program delves into the complex intersections between video games, the gaming industry, and socio-political issues. While video games are often seen as a form of entertainment, they also contain cultural and ideological elements that reflect and reinforce various social and political norms. Some games perpetuate damaging stereotypes and uphold gender or racial biases, while others offer empowering representations of marginalized groups and challenge established power structures. Moreover, the gaming industry itself is subject to the influence of political and economic forces, such as government regulations, corporate interests, and labor issues.

Examining the politics of gaming also entails exploring issues related to gaming culture, including the organization of gaming communities and their interactions with the wider society. Gaming communities can sometimes serve as sites of exclusion and harassment, but they can also be spaces that promote inclusivity and support for diverse perspectives and identities. Understanding the politics of gaming thus requires a nuanced and multifaceted approach that takes into account the many complex ways in which video games and gaming culture intersect with broader social and political concerns.

The program features two Italian premieres: Lucas Azémar’s Life on Earth (2019) and Soren Thilo Funder’s GAME Engine (Orange Bulletproof Kids) (2021).

The latter is a thought-provoking and multi-layered exploration of the intersection between gaming and reality. This immersive installation hereby presented as a single channel video, takes the viewers on a journey to an undisclosed location, where they are invited to an exclusive press meeting with a game developer.

Azémar’s Life on Earth introduces the elusive, Guess Who’s Back, a hacker known for his online hoaxes, who has caused the death of a man. Nobody knows since when the hacker operates, but everyone can meet him through his avatar at the Club des Crocos in the video game Life On Earth. This film presents a clash of real and virtual worlds in a universe of pixels, invented from scratch, funny and disturbing.

These special screenings are presented by Reset. Politics and Videogames, a collective editorial and research project.

NEWS: SPECIAL PROGRAM_MACHINEMA

MMF MMXXII is proud to present a special program titled MACHINEMA at the Museum of Interactive Cinema in Milan on March 26 2022, showcasing the most innovative and groundbreaking examples of this fascinating artform

Machinima is, first and foremost, the result of a mistake, much like “massage” (in Marshall McLuhan’s The Medium and the Massage) and “donkey” (instead on monkey, in Shigeru Miyamoto’s Donkey Kong). Specifically, it is the misspelled contraction of machine cinema (machinema), as Paul Marino wrote in one of the earliest books on the topic. The misspelling stuck because in addition to the reference to the machine, i.e., the computer, and cinema, it also alluded to anime, itself referencing animation. Far from being problematic, this confusion in terminology, is speaks volumes about the medium’s incredible versatility. In many ways, machinima has been able to repurpose previous audiovisual forms of expression and to introduce something original. This is certainly true for the works featured in this special program — David Blandy’s Androids Dream, Nicolas Bailleul’s Les Survivants, Marie Foulston’s The Grannies, and Sara Sadik’s Khtobtogone — four superb machinema.

The program will be exclusively presented exclusively on the silver screen of the MIC, Museum of Interactive Cinema in Milan, Italy on March 26 2022.
