Realizzato durante il primo blocco imposto dal governo cipriota per contenere il contagio di COVID-19, Adonis and the Lockdown Tactics è stato premiato dal Ministero della Cultura di Cipro. Riprendendo un tema familiare del genere fantascientifico — il loop narrativo — il machinima descrive la vita quotidiana durante la pandemia. Bloccato nella propria abitazione, Sim-Adonis rimanda inevitabilmente al protagonista del celebre film di Harold Ramis, Ricomincio da capo (1993), Phil Connors (Bill Murray), un uomo di mezza età intrappolato in un loop temporale, costretto a rivivere lo stesso giorno all’infinito.
A short machinima created during the very first lockdown imposed by the Cypriot government in 2020 in order to contain the spread of COVID-19, Adonis and the Lockdown Tactics received an award by the Cypriot Cultural Services. Relying on a familiar trope of the sci-fi genre — the recursive, looping narrative — this machinima illustrates the tedium of everyday life during a pandemic. Here, Adonis, a Sim trapped at home inevitably recalls the protagonist of Harold Ramis’ Groundhog Day. In this 1993 comedy, Bill Murray is Phil Connors, a middle aged man stuck in a time-loop, forced to re-enact the same day ad infinitum.

THE ARTIST
L’artista multidisciplinare Adonis Archontides ha studiato Illustrazione e Media visivi alla University of the Arts di Londra. Le sue opere, spesso satiriche e introspettive, indagano la produzione dell'identità come processo consapevole e inconsapevole nonché l’intersezione tra finzione, realtà e simulazione. Parte della sua ricerca incentrata sul suo omonimo Adonis — l’antica divinità greca della vegetazione e del desiderio — esamina gli effetti del tempo sull'interpretazione del mito. Appassionato videogiocatore, Archontides crede nel potenziale artistico del mezzo interattivo, che spesso utilizza come materia prima all’interno della pratica artistica. Recentemente ha creato il proprio avatar attraverso The Sims 4, ripercorrendo il viaggio dell’eroe di Joseph Campbell per mezzo della traiettoria della carriera di un artista. Archontides vive e lavora a Limassol, Cipro.
Adonis Archontides is a multidisciplinary artist who studied Illustration & Visual Media at the University of the Arts in London. His works are satirical and introspective; they often investigate the production of identity as a conscious or subconscious process, and the porosity between fiction, reality, and simulation. Part of his research focusing on his namesake Adonis, an ancient Greek deity of vegetation and desire, revolves around the effects of time on the interpretation of myths. An avid gamer, Archontides believes in the artistic potential of video games which often uses as raw material in his artistic practice. Most recently, he has been collaborating with an avatar of himself created in the popular simulation game The Sims 4, juxtaposing Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey with an artist’s career trajectory through an episodic narrative. Archontides lives and works in Limassol, Cyprus.
