Le Moment Fabrique (The Constructed Moment) è il primo film tratto dal progetto fotografico Down and Out in Los Santos che documenta lo stato di povertà all’interno della fittizia città di GTA V. L’opera - il cui titolo allude al concetto del "momento decisivo" formulato da Henri-Cartier Bresson - offre uno sguardo approfondito sulle vite dei senza tetto virtuali ritratti dall’artista grazie all’utilizzo della smartphone camera disponibile all’interno del videogioco. Alan Butler ha speso due anni a ritrarre questi avatar, la loro vita quotidiana e le loro relazioni sociali. Pur non svolgendo un ruolo narrativo significativo all’interno del gioco, essi rappresentano una presenza umana all’interno della simulazione, conferendo un maggiore realismo alla città di Los Santos. Nonostante la loro identità sia programmata - ossia predefinita a monte dai designer - Butler ha sviluppato un notevole livello di realismo sociale ludico, abbandonando il fucile per la macchina fotografica, catturando quegli aspetti dell’ambiente di gioco che solitamente passano inosservati. Così facendo, ha portato in primo piano la vera poetica della serie di Grand Theft Auto.
Le Moment Fabrique (The Constructed Moment) is part of an ongoing in-game photography project titled Down and Out in Los Santos, that documents poverty within the fictional city of GTA V. The film, whose title evokes Henri-Cartier Bresson’s notion of the “decisive moment” (Le Moment Décisif), provides a glimpse into the lives of the homeless portrayed by the artist with the in-game smartphone camera. Butler has spent two years documenting the lives of these avatars, their everyday routines, and their relationships. Although their function is relatively insignificant in narrative terms, they perform as a kind of environmental (non)-human presence that makes the urban spaces of Los Santos more “realistic”. Even if their behaviors are programmed, the artist has managed to provoke an emotional response. As his photographic journey demonstrates, Butler is more interested in ludic social realism than playing the game according to the designer’s intentions. By giving up on guns and violence and instead engaging with one of the most opaque features of the game environment, the artist brings to the surface the true poetics of the Grand Theft Auto series.

Alan Butler è un artista irlandese la cui pratica artistica esplora le logiche di funzionamento di internet, l’impatto dei media digitali e le pratiche di appropriazione. Nel 2009 ha conseguito un Master of Fine Arts presso il LaSalle College of the Art in Singapore e nel 2004 ha ricevuto una Laurea in Belle Arti presso il National College of Art and Design a Dublino. Le Moment Fabriqué è stato presentato al festival Les Rencontres d'Arles in Francia (2017). Alan Butler insegna nel corso di Fine Art Media presso il National College of Art and Design a Dublino. È rappresentato dalla galleria Green On Red Gallery di Dublino.
THE ARTIST
Alan Butler is an Irish artist whose practice focuses on the inner-workings of the internet, the effects of new media technologies, and the politics of appropriation. In 2009, he received a MFA from LaSalle College of the Arts in Singapore and in 2004 completed his BA of Fine Arts from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. Le Moment Fabriqué premiered at the Les Rencontres d'Arles, France (2017). Butler is a lecturer in Fine Art Media at the National College of Art and Design. He is represented by Green On Red Gallery in Dublin, Ireland.
